Barcelona reserves captain to be promoted to first team?

The Barcelona midfield was recently bolstered by the return of Frankie de Jong, who re-appeared on the pitch for the first time in 163 days, in the Champions League game against Young Boys.

However, de Jong getting back to full fitness, coupled with the impending return of Gavi, has not stopped Hansi Flick from thinking about more ideas on how to further reinforce the midfield.

Flick considering promotion of Unai Hernandez

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are working on the renewal of several young players, one of whom is Unai Hernandez.

In fact, Hansi Flick is considering the promotion of the young midfielder, who is a vital player in the Barça Atletic setup.

A midfielder by trade, Hernandez is the captain of Barça Atletic and it appears his performances in the youth competitions have caught the attention of Flick.

Earlier in the summer, Unai was approached by other clubs and was offered to leave Barcelona, just like Marc Guiu.

However, the versatile midfielder, who can also play out wide, opted to remain at the club. His current contract at Barcelona expires in 2025, but negotiations over a renewal are in process.

How can Unai help the Barcelona midfield?

Notwithstanding the early season injury of Marc Bernal, the Barcelona midfield looks in good shape at the moment, especially after the return of de Jong, coupled with green shoots over Pablo Torre.

However, having someone like Unai Hernandez as an option could be beneficial for Hansi Flick.

Known for his versatility and technical efficiency, coupled with an ability to create chances and score goals, Unai’s abilities are tailor-made for Barcelona. Promoting him to the first team, therefore, could be a step in the right direction.
